Devotional and Connections: I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Now there is in store for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me on that day…
—2 Timothy 4:7-8

Context Summary: This verse is not suggesting that we are to fight the good fight to keep our salvation, that is a gift from God and is eternal at the point that we accepted Christ as Savior (John 10:28-30). This verse is referring to rewards that we will be given by Jesus for our lives lived in obedience to Him while on this earth.

The life that we live in this sinful world certainly seems like a battle at times doesn’t it? Paul had fought the devil for years at this point in his life, he had been beaten and thrown in prison unjustly numerous times for standing for Christ. But this did not alter his course one bit, he stayed true to the mission that God had planned for him no matter how uncomfortable it was at times to do so. He likens it to a race, one that he had finished and kept his faith in Christ intact all along the way.

So how is your “race” going, how is mine? I am sure that you, like myself, have days where you feel you are winning the race and days you feel that you are losing ground. The important thing is to keep going on for Christ, He is cheering us on and waiting to give us our crown of life one day when we stand before Him!
