Why do most sequels suck so hard?

An absolute gem of a morning in the gloom….62 degrees and humid….in December no less.  If only the December 2009 version of YHC, bundled up, living in PA, and shoveling a foot of snow after a blizzard, could see the 2019 version of YHC this morning.  After saying, “damn you’re old”…..

…..he’d likely say, what’s with all this 60 degree weather in December, and why are you wearing that hat, do I become a pussy in my old age such that I can no longer handle the slightest cold????

YHC would then gently explain to his younger self that thanks to Al Gore and his invention of the internet, we have “climate change” (aka the artist formerly known as global warming; aka the artist formerly known as the weather).  This “climate change” makes it much warmer now due to heat generated from the thousands of google servers required to house cat videos, Seth Godin podcasts, and 2 billion 14-20 year old girls snapchatting duck-lip photos 24-7.

..as far as the hat in the warm weather, YHC would explain “bed-head” to younger YHC and show pictures of Stagecoach (see below) to illustrate what hair is supposed to look like on a man.

Younger YHC would then return back to 2009, resume shoveling, and contemplate his future life choices. This would create an aberration in the space-time continuum, making an alternate reality in 2019 in which the Gamecocks stomp the shit out of the Tigers year after year to which the Guvnor would say things like, “That Dabo’s jess a beggin’ fuh buttahmilk afta that ass whoopin'”.

*checking scores*……ok, so that didn’t happen I guess.

Well….it turns out that first blizzard; however, would pale in comparison to the next one which dropped 2 feet of snow on top of an ice storm.  The sequel in that case, was much worse than the original….#foreshadowing

We started a few minutes late as YHC sorted his gear and grabbed his weinke (which he did not use) after participating in F3 Legacy earlier.  Despite Devito calling in sick, the Pax were “Chippy” (see what I did there?) and ready for action.

After a quick disclaimer, we jumped into the carefully structured warm up….

SSH x 19 IC

Calf Raises (in honor of Stagecoach’s birthday, who was celebrating it somewhere else, we split your presents SC, FYI….) x 16 IC

Annie’s x 16 IC each arm (32 total)

TTT x 16 IC

IW x 16 IC

Gilad’s Pelvic Tilt’s x 4 IC

The last was a #crowdpleaser and was met with a lot of…..

…until finally Chubbs started to get the look below on his face and we had to stop.

Grab 2 bricks, run a lap around the entrance road and circle up in the parking lot for The Thang.

Also 19 reps + 80 reps + 4 reps = 1984, a little more #foreshadowing

We circled up and using the Lumbergh technique of “How to Win Friends and Influence People” (which is chapter two in his personal development book “Harry Lumbergh and the Half-Blood Prince”) YHC had the pax count off in one’s and twos, and the one’s turned to their right and faced that pax.

In normal Lumbergh fashion (notice how a lot of pax who didn’t show today are getting air time??), the man you were facing would be your partner and you’d spend the rest of the Q working together to overcome whatever YHC could throw at you.  This bond would result in a strong friendship….and who knows where that might go after the workout is over….

It was a little different for us…..as out here on the streets, in the gloom….

The pax were then instructed to turn away from their enemies, 180 degrees (or 270 for some and 43 for others #mathishard) and this person would be their partner.

And thus began our shitty sequel to the Emmy winning Karate Kid Q YHC did back in late 2017, available in all it’s glory here…..

Bricks, Bonsai, and Banzai!

We lined up at the top of the hill for some partner exercises that went down like this:

PAX 1 – run with the bricks to the bottom of the hill and return.

PAX 2 – would start the exercises, then flapjack with pax 1 until the cumulative total was met below:

Miagyi Merkins Phase 1 (50 wax on/wax off) – do a merkin (with your bricks), move right hand in clockwise circle motion (wax on), that’s one; do a merkin move left hand in clockwise circle motion (wax off), that’s two;

Miagyi Merkins Phase 2 (50 Sand the Floor) – do a merkin (with your bricks), move right hand in counterclockwise circle motion, that’s one; do a merkin move left hand in counterclockwise circle motion, that’s two  – Flutter’s on the six when done

100 Merkins total, plus a few extra for YHC as he explained to Lorena the difference between clockwise and counterclockwise at least 2 too many times.  TClaps to Turkey Burger for playing the role of Pothole and “encouraging” YHC on his merkin form.

Cobra Kai Chops (100 inside/100 outside) – like superman punches, with either an outside or inside chop, alternating right and left (with the bricks, courtesy of Buddy Love); – Plank on the six when done and/or grab one block for each group (Moose reunites with Chippy).

Pax line up on the baseline with their bricks in their hand.  Everyone assume a traditional fighting stance (see guy on right in bad ass pants)…

With the bricks and starting with left foot forward – L – jab, R – straight punch, R -front kick and step forward, then alternate – right foot forward R – jab, L – straight punch, L – front kick….continue this all across the parking lot and then run back.

We reformed our teams and switched things up a little here and had a little “competition”

PAX 1 – run a lap down around the entrance road in back

PAX 2 – do as many block rows as you can until smoked, then as many overheads, rinse and repeat until your partner returns, flapjack and pax 2 runs.

We all finished in the 100 ish+ rows/overheads for each team with the exception of Moose/Chubbs (who had Chippy) and Turkey Burger/Lunchable (who are Turkey Burger and Lunchable) who did a few times that.  Well done men, everybody wins!

For our last act, PAX 1 would again run to the bottom of the hill, this time without the bricks, while PAX 2 did BBSU’s (total of 50 per team) and each time you raise up to do a SU you do two punches with the bricks (just like the below, but with a softer yoga mat and a greater BMI).

Time was up, so we returned our bricks and blocks and moseyed back to the parking lot for BOM, COT, conclude BC.

We had lots of folks on the IR or dealing with family members that are on the IR (or in locations TBD), but we had a good turnout today.  T-Claps to EZ Bake, Lorena, Lunchable, Turkey Burger, Buddy Love, Moose, Chubbs, Phonebooth, Speedo, and Whitney for coming out today.  It was a good crowed with some enjoyable #mumblechatter.  Work was done and I suspect we’ll be a little sore tomorrow.

While the details of what we say at Legacy always stay there out of respect for the pax, there was a great discussion I will share with those currently enjoying Al Gore’s internet.

The discussion was around the things that hold us back from living the lives that we want to live and perhaps should be living.  Those things are several, but mainly they revolve around fear.  Fear often driven by very real potential consequences……if I do X, then I will risk losing Y (Y can be anything…..money, love, respect, security, family, etc.).

One of the biggest fears we discussed is the fear of what others might think.  That if we do X we might not live up to their expectations (or in reality, whatever we think their expectations are of us).  This is a powerful fear that paralyzes men and leads to inaction, frustration, and ultimately regret.  This is the type of fear that sucks the freedom right out of our lives.  If you’ve ever felt “stuck” or “out of control” in life, you know exactly what I speak of.

So what to do?  I struggle with the above on an almost daily basis (although much less these days than I was 6 or 7 months ago), but I’d suggest at least part of the answer can be found by #accelerating your 2nd and 3rd F’s (it has helped me for sure).

Share these thoughts with others who will listen and may have even traveled similar roads themselves (i.e. your F3 brothers) as after all a burden shared is a burden halved, so they say.  And from a 3rd F perspective, Phonebooth shared some great words of wisdom from the book of James today around this very topic.   I like also from John 14 which says “I am leaving you with a gift – peace of mind and heart.  And the peace I give is a gift the world cannot give.  So don’t be troubled or afraid”.

In a similar vein from a  devo plan by Erwin McManus I’m reading through:  “Peace does not come when you finally have control over your life; peace comes when you no longer need control”

It’s easy to say, but harder to do I realize, but what if you could relinquish that control, that fear, and not worry so much about what others thought?  What could you accomplish yourself, how could you help others accomplish more?

Good news is, it’s not too late and there are others willing to help if you need it.

Reminder here, if you want to accelerate your 2nd and 3rd F, make sure to give the new 2nd F @F3Locktite and 3rd F @F3TwoTil twitter handles a follow for information on news and events.

F3 Legacy – every Tuesday at Depot, 5 AM, come on out and #accelerate your 3rd F with us.  We are nearing 2 months of doing this and I think the regulars would agree that it’s beneficial to get together and chat about life’s trials, triumphs, and tribulations.  Come on out and join us.

Phonebooth reminded us to keep our veterans in our thoughts this time of year.  Not just those overseas protecting our country, but those here doing the same or now living civilian lives.

For all of us struggling with whatever fears or inhibitions holding us back from contentment and fulfillment.

Roommate’s sister and father for comfort and wisdom for their doctors as they battle various medical issues.

Prayers also for Roommate as he helps his sister and father cope with their issues.

If you read this far and you are wondering why Moose is the featured image, YHC thought he was recording a video of the pax in the COT, turns out it was just one picture.  In other news, Brother Si….you are welcome for the click bait.
