8. Devo: Gord Downie of the band the Tragically Hip died. He was diagnosed with brain cancer and in the next 18 months or so before he died he went on tour, finished an album with his band and recorded a solo album. I loved his music, but it seems like he was genuinely a great guy after reading over his obituary, remembrances, etc. He viewed his mission as making music, which he loved, to bring joy to other people. I take the following lessons from his life and death. First, no matter what your situation (sick or well, rich or poor), you have gifts that can be used to make other people better and to bring them joy. Don’t ever forget that and don’t ever throw in the towel. Second, find what brings you joy, and do it on a daily basis and then that joy will spread to others around you.
