Plant an Ebenezer

8 PAX (and a Starsky) beat the football season fartsack despite the late games.  Three of swift foot, and YHC was fortunate enough to share a special moment with the other 5.  Today’s destination was at the very edge of a Sunday one-hour reach but a little hustle got us there and back.  It’s a very important place for the Way/Turbeville/Weed family.  Six years ago (Tuesday 9/13), we lost a friend and brother – Brady Davis (Tripp) Weed III  – and ever since have worked to raise an Ebenezer.

Welcome, Disclaimer, and BOM

The Thang: Hendrix out to Barr Road and start working back along US-378.  Cross over in front of Ben Satcher Ford, where a rugged wooden cross and a few flowers marks the scene of the car accident.

Devo: Raise an Ebenezer – 1 Samuel 7:7-12

7 When the Philistines heard that Israel had assembled at Mizpah, the rulers of the Philistines came up to attack them. When the Israelites heard of it, they were afraid because of the Philistines. 8 They said to Samuel, “Do not stop crying out to the Lord our God for us, that he may rescue us from the hand of the Philistines.” 9 Then Samuel took a suckling lamb and sacrificed it as a whole burnt offering to the Lord. He cried out to the Lord on Israel’s behalf, and the Lord answered him.

10 While Samuel was sacrificing the burnt offering, the Philistines drew near to engage Israel in battle. But that day the Lord thundered with loud thunder against the Philistines and threw them into such a panic that they were routed before the Israelites. 11 The men of Israel rushed out of Mizpah and pursued the Philistines, slaughtering them along the way to a point below Beth Kar.

12 Then Samuel took a stone and set it up between Mizpah and Shen. He named it Ebenezer, saying, “Thus far the Lord has helped us.”

It’s important as God’s people that we recognize where He has acted in our lives – and that we establish them as monuments (whether physical or figurative) to remind us of his faithfulness.  We are not promised a life free of trials and hardships.  Only that God is faithful when we call.

Every successful Christian journey is marked with milestones and turning points.  I pray that we will all take time to look back at the ones you have set for ourselves – and use every joy and every hurt as a chance to set another.  And also that we’ll use them to share the ways that He’s been faithful in our lives so that we can help others.

Take it on back to Icehouse – right on time!
