The Snakepit guys postpone UF for a Spartan Bootcamp

So today marked my 3rd and final Q for the week – a Q per year at the first three AOs I went to.  I stumbled into F3 here at Snakepit by chance.  I showed up on a Saturday morning 3 years ago to go up and down the stairs.  I was prepping for the upcoming Spartan Super in Asheville, and the stairs at WKHS are the only thing nearby that resembles Asheville terrain.  A handful of guys were there talking and asked if I was there to work out with F3.  I said I wasn’t, but I would join anyway.  I didn’t know what to expect, I didn’t know about nicknames, I thought push-ups were called push-ups.  I soon learned how little knew.

That being said today’s workout was a Spartan themed workout consisting of a bunch of different exercises.  You run between the exercises trying to do as many laps as you could.  Each exercise could accommodate two PAX so we partnered everyone up.  Since the exercises could only accommodate two, we dispersed the groups to different starting points as to hopefully not clog up any area.

I gave a 20 second warning, no FNGs (well some had only been to UF, but that was about to change), I forgot the disclaimer, prayer

We hustled down to the football field where I gave the instructions.  I was pretty much spent from setting things up and I had my 2.0 to watch, so YHC basically walked around making sure things were going okay and took a few pictures.

Here are the exercises in order – where you actually started was random.

  • LOG CARRY – person 1 carries log to opposite sideline and back, person 2 does BBSUs, FLAPJACK
  • TIRE FLIP – person 1 flips tire 3 times out and 3 times back, person 2 does GAS PUMPs, FLAPJACK
  • PVC MERKINS –
    • 10 x wide-n-perpendicular
    • 10 x wide-n-parallel
    • 10 x narrow-n-perpendicular
    • 10 x narrow-n-parallel
  • BARBWIRE CRAWL – really an invisible barbwire crawl (but it hurts the same)
  • ROPE CLIMB – to top, while other person does…
  • BALL PULL-UPS – baseball or softball grips to chose from, then 20 x four count FLUTTERKICKs
  • FARMERS CARRY – two 5 gallon buckets of water, to opposite sideline and back
  • RUCKSUCK – put on ruck with 40# plate inside, 10 x SQUATs at bottom, go up right set of stairs, 10 x MERKINs at top, go over to left side of stairs, 10 x MERKINs, go down left set of stairs, 10 x SQUATs, take ruck off
  • BENCH STATION –
    • 10 x BENCH JUMPS
    • 20 x STEPUPs
    • 20 x DIPs
    • 15 x DECLINE PVC MERKINs
  • SPEAR THROW – 16 BURPEEs max, 2 spear throw attempts, making a “far” throw into the target takes away 8 burpees, making a “near” throw takes away 4 burpees, missing target does nothing
  • ROPE CLIMB – to top, while other person does…
  • RING MERKINS – to (near) failure, then 20 x four count FLUTTERKICKs
  • SANDBAG CARRY – carry 50# sandbag up and down the famous Snakepit stairs
  • BROCKS – short for brick and blocks
    • using bricks
      • 40 x CFTGs
      • 15 x Front Raises
      • 15 x Bent Over Fly’s
    • using 1 block
      • 15 x SQUATs
      • 30 x Overhead Presses
      • 30 x Bent Over Rows
    • using 2 blocks
      • 40 x SHRUGs
  • MEMORY TEST – when you get here you have to memorize a phrase that corresponds to your birth month, then at the end you have to recite that phrase, get it right – you’re done, get it wrong – 12 BURPEEs (then you’re done)

Due to wasps, the bench station was soon moved to a tire station.  My 2.0 Monster Jam was on spear duty – he kept everyone in check and played when no one was there.  I think most got 1 lap in before time was called.  It was a pretty large spread of stations.

What I didn’t realize was that they play Ultimate Frisbee there on Saturdays – and have been for like 6 months.  So I guess I changed things up a little (sorry).  Hopefully everyone had a good workout and learned a few tricks.

Afterward there are 8-10 PAX that played a shortened version of UF.  Monster Jam and I joined for a while to see what it was all about.  We’ll have to do a full UF game one day.
