Ides of March Beatdown – Roman Style!

The Pax mustered for an Ides of March beatdown, Ancient Roman style. Togas and sandals were declined by general assent in deference to the 30 degree temperatures, but conditions were otherwise favorable for some hard work.

After the disclaimer, the pax moseyed to the concession stand for a warm up:

Burpees x 3 oyo

SSH x 15 IC

Through the Tunnel x 11 IC

Little Baby Arm Circles x 11 each direction, IC

(3, 15, 44 assorted exercises for March 15, 44 BC – the infamous Ides of March whereupon Julius Caesar was assassinated by members of the Roman Senate)

The warm up was interrupted by a Burpee Train, reminding the pax that the best laid plans do not survive first contact with the enemy (in this case, CSX). The pax then grabbed some wall for a minute of wall sits and a discussion of the workout’s theme, because if YHC is good at anything, it is beating a dead horse.

The pax then moseyed to the football field and assumed the plank position in the near endzone while receiving instruction on the next exercise – the crossing of the Rubicon. Five years before his death, Caesar set himself in opposition to the Roman Senate irrevocably by marching a portion of his army across the Rubicon River – the recognized border of ‘civilized’ Rome, past which no military commander was permitted to bring their forces.

In our recreation, the pax first paired off and:

  1. Wheelbarrowed to the 25 yard line
  2. Sprinted to the starting endzone and back to the 25.
  3. Switched partners and wheelbarrowed to the 50
  4. Sprinted to the starting endzone and back to the 50
  5. Bear crawled to the 75.
  6. Sprinted to the starting endzone and back to the 75.
  7. Crab walked to the far endzone
  8. Sprinted to the starting endzone and assumed the plank position to wait on the six.

This set piece roughly approximated the crossing of the high officers in chariots (wheelbarrows), officers on horseback (bear crawls), and crossing of the infantry (Crabs. And if I need to explain that one, there’s no helping you).

After a brief recovery, the pax moseyed to the Rockpile and grabbed some weight for a little arm work. Caesar was purported to have said alea iacta est (the die is cast) prior to crossing the Rubicon, in recognition of passing a point of no return in his conflict with the Roman Senate. In keeping with the theme, the pax put their rocks on the ground between sets and moved a number of places to the left determined by a roll of a six sided die. This worked out poorly for YHC.

  • Curls for the girls x 20 IC
  • Military press x 15 IC
  • Bent over Rows x 20 IC
  • Tricep Extensions x 12 IC (12 because YHC nearly broke his skull with an over large rock)

The pax next moseyed to “The Hill” to conquer the Seven Hills of Rome (modified Jacobs ladder).

  • Sprint to the top, do 1 burpee, sprint to the bottom do 1 burpee
  • Sprint back to the top, do 2 burpees, sprint to the bottom, do 2 more.
  • Rinse and repeat until 7 burpees are done top and bottom.

YHC admits to overestimating his own threshold for pain on this one, and trading out burpees for merkins on the final two hill climbs. My bad.

Another brief plank break to wait on the six, and the pax – still clamoring for more – moseyed back to the concession stand for a little Mary – Dealer’s Choice.

  • Big Boys x 20 oyo
  • Ray Charles IC
  • Boat Canoes
  • Rosalitas IC

Finding that he could not beat the pax into total submission, YHC lead them back to the shovelflag for CoT.
