Follow the Leader, F3 Style

The pax gathered at Seven Oaks Park in favorable conditions – low seventies with mild (by Columbia standards) humidity. After the disclaimer, the pax moseyed to the concession stand for the warmup.

The Thang:

YHC hates Family Circus. “Hate” is a strong word, but Bil Keane’s creation was like a black hole of humor on the Sunday Comics page – it actually made Calvin and Hobbes less funny just by sheer physical proximity.

Well… no. Nothing can make Calvin and Hobbes less amusing. But I digress…

Despite this disdain for Family Circus, YHC read it nearly every Sunday growing up, just hoping to understand the appeal, or find something to cause a crack of a smile. Never happened.

Yet like most of you, YHC will always remember the periodic Sundays where Wild Bil mailed it in and gave us a dotted line of all the places Billy went when he was supposed to be going … I don’t know, to the next room over I guess, and how we all played a visual game of “follow the leader” every time one of those stupid maps showed up in his strip.

(Actual Strava map of an Enos Q)

In an effort to give the pax the same contempt for Family Circus, YHC created his own version of Follow the Leader.

The pax were instructed to look left and right as they held the plank position and identify the pax that would be behind them and in front of them respectively for the remainder of this element. Staying in line, the pax followed the Q from the concession stand to the Perfectly Good Hill where the run line transitioned to a bear crawl line up the hill. At the top of the hill the pax resumed running around the upper parking lot, interspersing the run with backwards running, then lunges, then proceeded to the tennis courts for karaokes. The pax proceeded to skip (yes, skip) to the top of Streeper Hill, run the switchback, and assume plank position. Having led the warmup portion of Follow the Leader, the Q then instructed the pax on Follow the Leader – Part Deux.  The pax line would now conduct a modified lumbee run, with the pax at the back running to the front and assuming the position of “leader” until the Q called “NEXT!” (approximately 2 minute intervals). Interesting to note, on their respective turns as leader the remaining pax strongly favored calling for stop in place exercises like burpees, LBCs, etc., to the more “keep it moving” variety such as lunges, bear crawls, and the like. YHC will consider further modification of instructions in the future.

After all the pax had a turn as leader, the Q resumed the lead position, led a backwards run up Perfectly Good Hill, crab crawled down again, and ended at the rockpile to polish our collective guns (or in YHC’s case, slingshots).
