  • The PAX: Fiji, The Don, Smokey, Hoser, Socrates, Cavity, Convoy, Hall Pass, FOB, and I've already forgotten our tenth pax because I didn't write the BB the same day. Sorry.

A Very Merry Unbirthday to you! (Yes, you.)

The pax convened on a cool morning to bid farewell to 36 year old FOB on the final day before old(er) age gripped him and yanked him one step closer to inevitable doom. The pax’ display of grief was minimal. Very frustrating for YHC.

The pax warmed up in the upper parking lot with LBACs, through the tunnels, windmills, imperial walkers, and slow squats with annoyingly variable cadence counts thrown in for good measure. Had to make sure the Respect crowd didn’t fall asleep on their feet. Warm up was polished off with 50 yards of lunges, and the pax proceeded to the top of Perfectly Good Hill and performed ten merkins before jogging (nay, sliding – icy dew added a degree of difficulty) down the hill and performing 9 merkins. Back up to the top for 8, and repeat with reducing reps until finishing at the bottom of the hill.

The pax moseyed to the Rockpile for upper body burn, and did curls, overhead press, tricep extensions, and chest press x 20, then rotated three rocks to the left and repeated the exercises x 15, rotate, repeat x 10, rotate, repeat x 5. With muscles burning, the pax skipped merrily to the concession stand and did 25 dips, 30 calf raises, and two laps around the stand, 20 incline merkins, 30 calf raises, and two more laps, then 15 decline merkins, 40 calf raises, and two final laps.

Pax returned to the shovel flag for Dealer’s Choice Mary.

DEVO

The men of Strut have determined to be more deliberate about a brief devo at the end of workouts, which YHC wholeheartedly supports. Today’s devo was on service. I was introduced to the concept of the “Birthday Q” during my first year of F3 and appreciated the concept. Our culture teaches that we are entitled, and especially entitled on our birthday, to behave selfishly. To work to serve others is selfless, and counter-cultural. More importantly, serving one another is what really improves us as men. Yes, the reps in the gloom may strengthen our bodies some and make us look trimmer in the short term, but that is superficial change at best. It is what we give rather than what we take that makes us better than we were, whether it’s at our AO, at our church, or in our family and community. Never leave a man where you found him. That includes yourself.

That is all.
