10 PAX Get Get Busy Honoring a Honoring a Hero

In the past year and a half or so taking part in this amazing fellowship and brotherhood we call F3, YHC can remember attending Shawshank maybe twice, mostly because they were in direct conflict with home way from home at Surge.  Also the #HIM of Shawshank were a tough bunch and YHC recalls that the QIC’s of the past had really put a beating on.  As such the idea of ever Q-ing at Shank was appealing and YHC couldn’t have picked a better day to share and lead the awesome men of Shawshank.

Conditions: High 40’s ands Overcast (at least thats what my phone said)

The Thang:

Being that YHC is a retired member of the worlds largest police department and, at one time, the 9th largest standing army in the world the NYPD, YHC wanted to do a workout to honor Officer Jason Rivera who was shot tragically lost his life in the Line of Duty on a few days ago and honor his partner Wilbert Mora who was also shot in the same incident and at the time of this back blast is still in grave condition in a hospital in NYC.

YHC came up with a workout loosely based on several Hero WOD’s that were researched and added elements here and there to make it more specific here and there to make it more relevant and specific to the NYPD.

Here’s how it went…..

Set 1

10 Rounds

-1 Burp and Merk (burpee with single push up at bottom, but increase the merkin by one with each round…for example round 2 would be burpee w two push ups at bottom before completing the burpee and continue to increase until 10 push ups are done at the bottom of the burpee position)

-10 Air Squats (there was some discrepancy here….YHC called Air Squats but was asked if we were using the blocks to which the response was “yeah for curls and squats…but we got it all sorted out and went with the original plan for air squats)

-13 Curls

-Sprint to end of the soccer field and back

RECOVER

Set 2

10 Rounds

-1 Burp and Merk (this time we started with 10 push ups at the bottom of the burpee position and decreased the push ups by one for each round until after round 10 we got back to one push up at bottom)

-10 OH Press

-13-BBSU

-Sprint to the end of the soccer field and back

RECOVER

Return the blocks and mosey back to the shovel flag

Moleskin:  As the Q was being explained the questions was asked what the numbers of reps were for.  10 and 13….10-13 is the radio transmission for “officer down” and the run to the end of the soccer field in back was to signify the response of the officers after hearing that bone-chilling transmission come over the radio…run….go get your brother….get there!

“The Final Inspection”

The Policeman stood and faced God, which must always come to pass.  He hoped his shoes were shining as brightly as his brass.

“Step forward now, policeman.  How shall I deal with you?  Have you always turned the other cheek? To My church have you been true?”

The policeman squared his shoulders and said, “No, Lord I guess I ain’t, because those who carry badges cant alway be a saint.

“Ive have to work most Sundays and at times my talk was rough, and sometimes Ive been violent, because the streets are awfully tough.

“But I never took a penny that wasn’t mine to keep….Though I worked a lot of overtime when the bills got too steep.

“And I never passed a cry for help, though at times I shook with fear. And sometimes, God forgive me, Ive wept unmanly tears.”

“I know I don’t deserve a place among the people here. They never wanted me around except to calm their fear.

“If you’ve a place for me here, Lord, it needn’t be so grand.  I never expected or had too much but if you don’t……I’ll understand.”

There was silence all around the throne where the saints had often trod.  As the policeman waited quietly, for the judgement of his God.

“Step forward now, policeman, you’ve borne your burdens well.  Come walk a beat of Heaven’s streets, you’ve done your time in hell.”
