Snow Day

Ephesians 5:15-17 “So be careful how you live. Don’t live like fools, but like those who are wise. Make the most of every opportunity in these evil days. Don’t act thoughtlessly but understand what the Lord wants you to do.’

When my oldest son was about 8 years old, Lexington, SC had a rare snow event. Several inches of snow stuck to the ground for several hours. We were so excited for him getting to experience his first real snow. We set outside to build snowmen, sledded down the inclined driveway, etc. Our neighbors with similar aged boys joined in on the fun. After an hour of playing (and being cold), my son decided he wanted to go inside and make hot chocolate and warm up by the fire. He eventually decided the warmth of the house was where we he wanted to be while the rest of us enjoyed the rest of the day outside. The next day, he woke up excited to play in the snow again, making up for lost time from the day before. He failed to realize warmer temperatures had already melted most of the snow away.  He didn’t realize how rarely it snows where we live. Once he realized he had lost this ‘snow time’ forever, he was devastated. He cried for hours. To this day, my wife and I reference his ‘snow day’ when we feel like he’s missing an opportunity he doesn’t quite recognize.

Paul reminds us in Ephesians 5 to ‘make the most of every opportunity.’ Whether we have the opportunity to help someone in need, share the gift of salvation with someone, or even accept the gift of salvation for ourselves, we don’t want to miss out on those opportunities. We never know when our next ‘snow day’ will come.
