Workout of the week May 14-20

Q schools are great and they are going to continue to happen this year.  In the interest of letting pax know what YHC thinks the aspects of a good workout and Q are more consistently, we’ve decided to start a workout of the week (WOW) post that will run (nearly) every week.

The purpose of the post is two-fold (1) give a fellow pax some extra loud tclaps on a workout that was well done, and (2) give a good example of a workout that did it right (one the rest of us can follow).  There are 6 keys to a good workout (in no particular order):

  • Intensity – needs no explanation
  • Simplicity – moves are explained and understood with ease
  • Completness – hit all the body parts
  • Appropriateness – intensity is good, but know your crew.  Don’t get anyone injured.
  • Fit for all – the workout should be tough for all levels.
  • Fun – needs no explanation

Each week the WOW will be picked as a workout that stood out in some (or all) of these areas.  Nominations to YHC are appreciated (has to have a BB though).

This past week’s WOW, comes from none other then HotTub.  HT is leaving us this week, and he had two chances to dish out some last minute brutal work outs for the pax of NE Columbia.  He will surely be missed, and i’m afraid we will never have another.  His Q at Sandlot last Tuesday is this week’s WOW (see the full BB at http://f3nation.com/2017/05/16/hot-tubs-farewell-to-sandlot/)

The Thang (from his post):

SSH x 125 IC (mumblechatter ignites early)

Squat x 50 IC (threats breakout of not getting to 125)

Sit up progression x 60 IC

Merkins x 100 OYO, then mosey to bottom of Hot Tub Hill

The Hill

Crab walk full lap of Hot Tub Hill (approxiamately .2 miles uphill and downhill)

Big Boy Sit Up x 25 at halfway up, top, halfway down, bottom

Plank / extra BBSU until all finish

Bear crawl full lap of Hot Tub Hill (approxiamately .2 miles uphill and downhill)

Merkin x 15 at halfway up, top, halfway down, bottom

Mosey to Shovel Flag

What I like about it: The intensity this workout is clear. When someone tells you to do something crazy (like crab-walk and bear-crawl up and down HT hill), it can go one of two ways: a 1/4 of the way through everyone including the Q realizes it was a bad idea and everyone wants to quit, or immediately everyone can tell it’s a bad idea, but everyone still wants to try. This workout was the latter, and what drove everyone to try was that it was one of HT’s last Q’s.  Knowing it was one of his last Q’s HT tried to get a little more out of the pax here.  Smart move.

Another positive aspect of the workout was the completeness.  HT starts with hitting all the body parts, and then uses crab-walks and bear-crawls (both of which hit most muscle groups) heavily in the second half of the workout.

You’ll be greatly missed HT.  For Q’s like this and all motivation you’ve given us over the years.  Good luck in Summerville.  We’ll see you in the gloom.

  1. That workout was TURRIBLE and Hot Tub should be shunned for calling it. I vote he’s banished to Summerville.
