Misty Morning VQ Beatdown @ Depot

Conditions
It was a misty, damp, moist, etc. morning, but only 68 degrees, which was nice. As the saying goes, “If it ain’t raining, we ain’t training.”

1 Minute Warning (as the hecklers began to rile themselves up thinking they were going to fluster YHC during his VQ)

Disclaimer Given

COP:
SSH x 15 IC (with a perfectly-timed pause between “starting position” and “move,” I might add)
TTT x 15 IC
LBAC x 20 IC

Too much mumble chatter erupted at that point (i.e., the aforementioned hecklers trying desperately to shake YHC), so it was time to shut them up…

The Thang
YHC was inspired by a summer post at Blackbeard’s Revenge in Murrells Inlet, where the QIC was relentless in his efforts to exhaust us for 45 minutes, as well as make those of us on vacation seriously regret the prior evening’s choice of the fried seafood platter. He was punctual with starting and ending the workout; we were constantly moving; and he offered very limited (but deliberate) rest breaks throughout. Following that framework, we went to work…

Mosey from the COP down the hill, around the main road, up the new road, through the parking lot, and to the basketball court. Remembering from my Q research that the workout is supposed to be about the PAX, not the Q, I offered anyone who wanted it the option of running straight to the court and bypassing the road.

Partner up at the court and spread out along the end line (in blatant disregard of Stagecoach’s 11th hour advice that the end line would not be big enough to accommodate everyone). The end line was the perfect place for one partner to begin suicides while the other partner began 100 burpees. This was the one exercise I borrowed from Blackbeard’s. I remember the feeling of how daunting “100 burpees” sounded when he said it, so I wanted the PAX to experience that too. There was some mumble chatter and sarcasm throughout, but the PAX finished strong.

A brief resting stroll down to the soccer field end line, where the real fun began. Bear crawls, crab walks, and wheelbarrows are about my least favorite exercises, so that’s what I chose for us to do next. Bear crawl across the field to midfield; one partner then wheelbarrows the other to the other end line; crab walk back to midfield; then switch wheelbarrowing partners back to the start. YHC admittedly took advantage of some modifications during this exercise (#lungesareeasy).

Huddle up at midfield for the next set of exercises. Classic four corners, 10 reps, 3 sets.

Round 1: Arms – Merkins, Diamonds, Release Merkins, Mountain Climbers (Note that several PAX were under the impression that these exercises did not work your arms. Wikipedia says otherwise: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Push-up.)
Round 2: Abs – Crunches, Hello Dollys, Freddie Mercuries, Big Boys
Round 3: Legs – Squats, Calf Raises, Monkey Humpers, Squat Jumps

With about 8 minutes to go at that point, some of the PAX were counting on a nice mosey back to the COP for perhaps a light-hearted game of Mary. They were wrong.

Back to the basketball court, where the original intention was to rinse and repeat the 100 burpee/suicide exercise. YHC was just slightly off with his timing, though, so it was cut down to 25. That left us 3 minutes to Double Applesauce back to the COT.

Signup to Q. YHC can do it, anyone can.

-YHC had an amazing apparent save as the shovel flag began to tilt, but then lost it as he tried to reestablish it into the ground. It was reminiscent of Chunk’s epic “I got it…I don’t got it” drop in The Goonies: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Smx7MT4PtRI #classic.

P.S. Thanks for the support and encouragement. It was fun!
