F3 Lake Murray – 2023 and Me Weight Loss Challenge

Men of F3 Lake Murray, 2023 is nigh upon us!

As we approach this new year, it’s a good time to do some self-reflection on the current year and think about where you want to take your physical and mental health (as the two are inextricably linked) in 2023.

Maybe you are finishing the year up on fire, and ready to hit 2023 in the nuts just like you did 2022.

Or maybe 2022 wasn’t your best year, and you want to get back on track in 2023.

Either way, the reality is, none of us are getting any younger, maybe excluding Fiji, who seems to only get fitter and increasingly more handsome with age, I mean look at this guy….

Aside from Fiji; however, likely more than a few of us (YHC included) could benefit from dropping a few pounds.

While there is nothing magical about January 1st, it is a fitting place to leave the past behind and focus on making the new year your best yet. So, on Sunday January 1st the “2023 and Me Challenge” will kick off. The aim of this challenge is to help you (and me) shed some pounds and help your F3 brothers do the same.

The rules of the challenge are simple:

  1. Read the below and HC before January 1st to me @F3_Fools_Gold on twitter, via text (if you have my digits), carrier pigeon, etc. if you want in. I will add you to our twitter thread.
  2. On January 1, 2023, you will weigh in and report your starting weight as well as your weight goal for the month (where you want to be on 2/1/23).
  3. Each Sunday morning you will weigh in, and by noon you’ll report your weight and the number of days that week you hit your self-set fitness/fueling goals (more below on these).
  4. YHC will tabulate all the points and send out leaderboards on an ~weekly basis.

Wait, what? Points? How do I get those?

We’ll get into the weeds on the calculations once the challenge begins, but simply put, the more weight (and % body weight) you lose, AND the more consistently you hit your daily self-set fitness/fueling goals the more points you will earn for your team. There is really no math on your end, YHC will handle all of that.

What’s this about a team?

This will be a team-based challenge, so all that belt tightening and point earning you are doing will help you AND your teammates out, hopefully promoting some healthy competition and maybe a little good-natured shit talking on the way to bikini season as well.

Ok, so what are self-set fitness/fueling goals?

It is well established (the internet, 2022) that two of the primary components of losing weight are your activity level and diet. At the beginning of the challenge, you’ll pick your own daily fitness (activity) and fueling (aka food) goals. These can be literally anything you want but should be something you or your smartphone/smart gadget are willing to track daily, and they should help move you forward without being too easy or too onerous. You’ll share these goals with the group for accountability.

  • Example Daily Fitness Goals: Get 10k steps, post at F3, workout at the gym, cycle x miles, get x minutes of exercise, sleep x hours, etc. etc. etc.
  • Example Fueling Goals: Track your calories, no more than x calories/day, skip dessert, intermittent fast, have a salad for lunch, etc. etc. etc.

Point is, you get to pick these goals so they are totally flexible….

Additionally, if it just isn’t working for you, you can change things up.

We’ll also have some bonus challenges from time to time that are optional and designed to #accelerate your weight loss and/or get you out of your comfort zone, and make you uncomfortable in general (like the GIFs above and below).

That is about all for now. I encourage you to HC to this and to spread the word. Ten of us did a similar challenge in 2022 and on average lost 12 lbs./person over a 4-month period. Not everybody kept that off unfortunately, but 2023 is a new year and it was impressive watching the progress that folks made. I know the extra accountability and encouragement will help.

    Great message and photos, I’m sure even guys who don’t need to lose weight will join in after reading this. However the photo that you posted of me was unauthorized and of an old person wanting to be me. So if you would like an actual photo of your Fijiness my people can make that happen
