We say it a lot, but this is one of those things that means nothing with no action. We say that if you see someone struggling or even perceive that they may be struggling to reach out to them. How often do you take action on that though? Recently I was exchanging texts with a friend and had the thought of how this pandemic hasn’t really had much impact on me, then I realized how wrong I was. I looked back at where I was before and where I’m at now and the difference was alarming. I then thought, I’m certain I’m not the only one. So when I saw that a couple of my friends were struggling, I took action. I sent them a text to check in on them. And sometimes, a text is sufficient…but how much more meaningful is to actually take some of your time out of your day and actually call them? I’d say you’d be surprised at the difference it would make in the response you receive. I found out that both friends were going through some major life changes; both opened up about what was going on and one wept (never saw a tear shed from him in my life). Did my call change their entire world? Meh, that wasn’t the intention so I won’t even speculate. Did it let them know I cared, absolutely.
Today is the 22nd. Many are aware of the 22/day statistic for Veterans. These two friends of mine are fellow Marine’s and Veterans. I was almost a statistic at one point in my life, they both were almost statistics. Again, did my call change that? I have no idea, but I’d rather take the time to call and listen to them express their pain and struggles then to see them become a statistic. I’d rather do that for anyone, because one is one too many.
God has called us to love, so take action on that men. Pick up the phone, check in on someone, and let them know that you’re there for them. Isaiah 6:8 “Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying: “Whom shall I send, and who will go for Us?” And I said: “here Am I. Send me!” He sent you here to be a difference-maker, go be a difference-maker.
This year has been rough on so many, lets build each other up.
