Preblast: GORUCK Custom Light

Fresh off the largest Custom in GORUCK history, it was clear there was enormous interest in both a GR Heavy (which some of our finest are tackling in March) and a GR Light. Interest in a GRL not only came from some F3 brothers but also from many Ms, including the M of YHC. If YHC has only learned 2 things in life, one is “if the pax wants it, the pax gets it” and the other is “if the wife wants it, the wife gets it.”

Thanks to some guidance from GRC planner extraordinaire, Robber, wheels are in motion for an F3SC GORUCK Custom Light to be held the evening of MAY 1, 2015 in COLUMBIA. It will be an F3 event but not your typical F3 event. We’ve invited the Ms and other FiA sisters to join us for some ‘good livin.’

You may be wondering, what’s the difference between a challenge and a light? There are 2 major differences. 1) a light is approx half the duration of a challenge, and 2) you carry less weight. Many more details on the specifics of a light to come.

Pricing will run similar to the F3SC GRC. $50 initial commitment and another $30-ish later. We’ll start with the 1st 35 HCs to form a team. If we need to form more teams, we know we can do that. YHC is betting this happens. Make $50 payment through PayPal to [email protected]. Choose friends/family option. Initial payment due by 2/15/15.

Here’s hoping we get Cadre Geoff…

Aye!

  1. Send email to [email protected] with request to be added to Slack account (slack.com) for GoRuck event. Channel can be accessed via web browser or phone app. Makes communication amongst event participants easier via searchable message thread, custom channels for communication, and managed digests emailed to users who can not frequent site. 100% participation can be achieved with a few early adopters buying in an spreading the word. Request your invite now and start advertising its use to your brothers. Aye!

  2. Blackbeard, I’m a fan of Slack, and have used it for a couple years with teams, however, this group, along with other GORUCK and custom GORUCK events use Facebook groups to communicate. What’s the compelling reason to maintain another channel of communication that Facebook and Twitter (official F3 medium) don’t give us.

Most of these guys (and gals in this case) already have a Facebook account, I doubt many have a Slack account.

Just curious your thoughts on this, and trying to understand what you’re advocating here.

    Thanks man…

    1. Fair question.

Twitter doesn’t really lend itself to event-specific banter (with the possible exception of group DMs) and Facebook seems to be much more infrequently used among the F3 men I work out with (Isotope). After using WhatsApp while training with the GRH guys and noting that AP (F3 Metro) adopted Slack for nantan/comz communication between regions, I thought Slack would be a better solution for F3 in general.

Given Slack’s ability to have custom channels, searchable content and the ability to get updates via email without full participation, it seems to be a more practical solution than commercial social media options. With access via custom smartphone apps and via web browser, it is fairly accessible to anyone and you can use any email account to register. Since it’s private, you don’t have to be as concerned with sharing personal details as needed. It’s like having a Facebook Messenger group with more customization options.

Like you, I have been using Slack for projects with colleagues for some time so I am “drinking the Kool-Aid”. I did not mean to force this tool on any one group, but rather wanted to get the word out that it’s here if you want it. Slack is by no means required and if this event has a working solution, then there is no need to add another form of communication to the mix. I will not be offended if your group decides to stick with what’s working for you. Aye!
