You Get What You Put in at Shawshank

YHC is sure that this title will conjure up a “That’s What She Said” comment in the heads of the less mature among us.  Not YHC, just some others out there.  That’s okay, we want this thing of ours to be fun.

However, having fun, laughing, mumble chatter, and busting each other’s chops must be done in the commission of getting better in the first F.  If we are not putting work in and using this as a social hour, what are we really accomplishing?

Shawshank has the ball and chain awards that we have given out the last couple of years.  The “lock” on the award symbolizes what “locks us in” at F3.  That’s the workout.  We can all get better at being physically fit and everyone wants to be there in some capacity.  This is linked by our F3 brothers or “the chain” to our faith or “the ball” that keeps us grounded.  It all starts at the first F and we have to respect it.  Getting better here brings us closer to God.

YHC has no room to criticize anyone for mumble chatter.  Ken Doll, especially, can attest to my willingness to make fun of even the smallest mistake. This is why it is given back to me so much.  YHC is even more guilty of making inappropriate comments, “that’s what she said” being a favorite. Personally, I love this.  It keeps the seriousness at bay and allows you to have fun during some really sucky times.  YHC is even guilty of making this a social hour at times and forgetting about the 1st F.

It just gets dicey when we lose sight of why we are all out here at 5:30 in the morning.  Ultimately, we must find ways to burn calories in the 1st F, incorporate the 2nd F, and always be mindful of the 3rd F.  They all have to be involved.  That’s what it’s all about.

Wise counsel

The work is too heavy for you; you cannot handle it alone.

Exodus 18:18

Moses was diligently working, serving as Israel’s judge (Exodus 18:13). Yet he chose to listen to his father-in-law’s warning (vv. 17–18).

Jethro wasn’t in the thick of things, but he loved Moses and his family and could see trouble ahead. Perhaps that’s why Moses was able to listen to Jethro and heed his advice. Moses set up a system for “capable men from all the people” to take on the smaller disputes, and he took the more difficult cases (vv. 21–22). Because he listened to Jethro, rearranged his work, and entrusted others to shoulder the load, he was able to avoid burnout during that season of life.

Many of us take our work for God, our families, and others seriously—passionately even. But we still need to heed the advice of trusted loved ones and to rely on the wisdom and power of God in all we do.
