#Jumanji with side of Heresy

13 gluttons for punishment showed up at #Jumanji expecting some quality 2ndF mixed in with the usual ramblings of today’s guest Q.  As is always the case, there was work done.  As requested, YHC mixed in some discussion of the 2ndF, accountability and what makes F3 work.  Not expected on the menu was a brief but notably erroneous sound bite of bad theology which will have to be addressed below for those unlucky enough to be within earshot.  In spite of all the chatter, hopefully something of value was left behind.

Conditions: 65 Degrees and Clear

Mosey around back of the toilet shack and grab a block.  #ChooseWisely

In moving the herd, with blocks, from the back side of the toilet shack to the school, the following first installment was provided for those within ear shot.  The gist of it was that we post, we show up at F3 workouts because we know others will be there, that others had the fortitude to climb out of the #fartsack and do work.  Accountability starts with trusting others to do what is right… and that means we each must do what we’re called to.  That’s one piece of the puzzle of why F3 works.  Most of us would never do this, workout out the way we do, if others weren’t doing it too.  We need the camaraderie and we need our brothers out here encouraging us to keep coming back.  it’s the best kind and most needed kind of peer pressure.

Having regained normal respiration, the pax partnered up and lined up on the basketball courts for a little teamwork.  While one partner ran (or bear crawled) to the wall, the other AMRAP’d an exercise before flap-jacking possitions and the second partner ran while the first took up the block exercise.  The sets and work was as follows:

  • Partner 1 farmers carry both blocks to the wall and back while Partner 2 does merkins. – 100 merkins total and most pax did a pair of farmers carry trips to the wall.
  • Partner 1 sprint to the wall and back / Partner 2 overhead pressed the block – 100 presses total.
  • Partner 1 Bear Crawls to the wall, sprints back / Parner 2 does block goblet squats – 100 squats total
  • Partner 1 sprints to the wall and back / Partner 2 does block curls – 100 curls total.
  • Partner 1 Cusak’s the block to the wall / Partner 2 does burpees – 50 burpees total

At this point, the question was asked what impact having a partner has on the work done.  The obvious answer, we push ourselves harder when someone else is dependent on us.  Teamwork works because not only do we depend on one another but we work harder when that’s the case.  No one wants their partner to have to pick up his slack.

Mosey around the school to the front for a second, brief, partner COP including:

  • Derkins off of the partner – 50 Total split between the partners
  • Iron Cross – 50 Total
  • Big Boy Situps with the partner in plank holding feet – 50 Total
  • Partner Assisted Squats (#Fail) which devolved into 20 squats OYO.  #NoteToSelf – Don’t pair a little guy and a big guy for demonstration purposes.

Mosey back around to our temporary block pile and circle up for a mini Block COP:

  • Block overhead press X 10 4Ct IC
  • Block tricep press X 5 4Ct IC
  • Block curls X 10 4Ct IC
  • Block bench presses X 20 4Ct IC
  • Block Raise from above the head (laying down) to bench press position X 5 on command

In returning the blocks to their rightful place behind the toilet shack, the three requirements for true accountability were discussed…  1) an objective standard, 2) A person (#HIM) to which one is accountable, 3) consequences to failure.  Somewhere amidst the discussion, the Q’s theology went awry.  The intent was to express that, while God has clear objective standards, often the consequences to spiritual failure aren’t readily apparent.  We’re often mercifully forgiven before our failures reach the need for corrective action (in the form of lighting, possibly).  For spiritual growth, therefore, it can require an earthly mentor to encourage discipline with more tangible consequences to failure.  That’s the case in almost everything we do…  without a clear standard, someone there to make sure we achieve our goals and then some motivational reason not to fail, we’re moving nowhere.  None of this in F3 is with the goal of forced requirements or any sort of punishment.  Instead, we’re all here to help one another grow, mature and get better.  We need to be the kind of men who will deliberately hold others accountable with the guts to point out one anothers failures… not in our own selfrighteousness but with the intent of helping others improve.  While that can be challenging, the guys of F3 are the type of guys who want and need to hear the truth (in love) and be confronted in failure.  It’s a dirty job, it requires getting into the muck of the lives of others, but that is exactly our calling.  It is only when we’re iron ourselves that we can sharpen another who is, likewise, a man of iron.

In the final minutes we crashed through four minutes of Mary with the following:

  • LBCs X 25 4Ct IC
  • Russian Twists X 25 4Ct IC
  • Flutter Kicks X 25 4Ct IC

COT & BOM

Moleskin:

  • My apologies for the heretical detour.  As AlterBoy put it, “we know what you meant.”  I hope that’s the truth.  If you’ve got questions or concerns, hit me up.  That, too, is iron sharpening iron.
  • Strong work by the guys, especially pushing themselves (and their partners) down on the basketball court.  I think we were all pretty close to smoked by the time the Burpees got going.
  • Disappointing not to have any new faces.  T-Claps to whoever was EH’ing the guy in the parking lot.  Jumanji’s in a great spot if we can spread the word through the neighborhood.
  • Amazing to have all 13 post for Coffeeteria afterwards.  That’s a great testimony to the strength of the 2nd F already at work in guys.
