2nd Annual Masters Trivia

Hello friends…the best week of the year here in the south has arrived.  Warm weather is back, azaleas are in bloom and the best golfers in the world have taken up residence an hour down I-20.  For YHC, Masters week has always signified the start of spring.  When you step onto the grounds of Augusta National you can’t help but feel recharged and reenergized after a long, cold winter.  History is as important to Masters lore as any tournament anywhere.  So let’s kick this week of with some Masters trivia F3 style.

Conditions: upper 50’s and clear, just about perfect

The Thang:

Run around the track and down to the football stadium:

  • SSH x 15 IC
  • IW x 15 IC
  • TTT x 15 IC
  • Windmill x 15 IC

Workout Notes:

  • Full Suicide = run to 25 yd line, back to goal line, run to 50 yard line and back, run to 75 yard line and back, run length of field and back
  • Half Suicide = run to 50 yard line and back, run full length and back
  • On the Six = instead of planking while waiting, run the hill under the scoreboard

Round 1:

  • Rory took a four shot lead into Sunday’s final round in 2001.  He makes the turn after shooting a 37 on the front 9.  What did he score on the next three holes?  And what was his final round score?
    • 6 over on 10, 11 and 12 leading to a final round 80.  He tripled 10 after his drive nearly hit one of the cottages.
    • I think a combination of Updyke and Toe Tag got this answer correct.
      • 80 LBC’s, 6 Iron Crosses then run a full suicide
      • Hills on the six

Round 2:

  • What is the only driveable Par 4 at Augusta National?  I need the hole number and distance listed on the card.  Extra credit if you get the name of the hole.
    • Number 3, 350 yards, Flowering Peach
    • Dirtbag got the hole number correct but no one was able to get the other parts of the question
      • 3 sets of 10 burpees, run full length of field and back in between sets.
      • Hills on the six

Round 3:

  • What is the only hole with no bunkers?
    • Number 14
    • Figured this would be a tap in for the pax but it proved to be one of the more difficult ones.  After process of elimination they finally answered correctly.
      • Head to the stadium bleachers and do 14 merkins at the bottom of each portal.  Run to the top of the bleachers after each set and then over to the next portal.  I think there were seven portals total.  A lot of steps and a lot of merkins.
      • Hills on the six

Round 4:

  • What happened in 1992’s final round on Golden Bell that will live in Masters lore forever?
    • Freddie’s ball stops, incredibly, on the bank just before Rae’s Creek.  There is no way the ball should have stopped where it did.  He would go on to win his first and, sadly, only green jacket.
    • First the pax had to figure out what hole Golden Bell is (No 12).  Between See Saw and Toothpick they figured out that Freddie won in ’92.  Then I believe it was Toe Tag that recalled the ball stopping on the bank.  Nice teamwork.
      • 92 mtn climbers, 100 yard backward run, 100 yard forward run
      • Hills on the six

Round 5:

  • In 2005’s final round Tiger hit one of the most iconic chip shots in the history of golf on his way to another green jacket.  What hole was it on and who did he beat in a playoff?
    • Number 16, Chris DiMarco
    • Toothpick and several others knew right away that it was No 16.  Who he beat was much more interesting.  Dirtbag threw out Retief Goosen, ha ha, blast from the past.  Wrong.  A bunch of other names were batted around before Toe Tag thought a former USC fullback was the culprit.  To his credit he knew the answer but went with Patrick instead of Chris.
      • 16 squats at the 25, 50, 75 and 100.  Run back.
      • Hills on the six

Round 6:

  • Who choked away the largest 54 hole lead and how many strokes was it? Who took advantage and won the tournament?
    • Greg Norman blew a 6 shot lead to Faldo in one of the most epic collapse’s the sport has ever seen.
    • Several pax knew right away that it was Norman.  I think it was See Saw that knew he lost to Norman and eventually figured out that it was a six shot lead.
      • 54 OH arm claps, full suicide
      • Hills on the six

Round 7:

  • In 2016 Spieth carried a 5 shot lead into the back 9.  But we all know that this is where the tournament truly begins.  What happened on number 12 and who wins the tournament?
    • He makes a quad after coming up short on his first shot and when his ball hits the bank and plunges into Rae’s Creek.  But the next shot is where he lost the tournament.  Takes a drop a good ways back to give himself a full wedge but digs a crate in the turf and chunks it right into the creek again.  He would go on to make a 7 and relinquish the lead to Danny Willet.  Who?
    • Credit See Saw for coming up with Danny Willet.  Impressive.
      • Line up on the sidelines.  Do 7 BBSU’s on one sideline, run to the other side, do 7 merkins, continue for a total of seven reps.

Really solid work by all of the pax this morning.  YHC was impressed with their Masters knowledge.  There was a lot of disappointment in the fact that a correct answer earned you the opportunity to complete each exercise to its fullest extent with everyone else.  This was meant to be a tough but fun workout.
