Working out on the Safe Run with Shawshank

Good times this morning were had by all as we ran the Shawshank loop of the Safe Run and used the upper field for the workout.  We found out that Coon Dog has the same physical ailments as someone twice his age, mainly because he wouldn’t stop talking about it.  He did run a full stride lite, so there’s that.  It seemed that the workout “much made” sense today, thanks for that, Brick!  Enjoyed it today, see below on what we did.

Devo:

The pastor on Sunday spoke of David and Goliath.  We all know the story…young David goes out on an errand to bring his brothers food and to report back to Jesse on their well-being.  Instead, David goes out and converses with the men of Israel’s army about Goliath after seeing the giant taunt the Israeli army. David convinces Saul to allow him to fight the giant.  Instead of using the armor that Saul gives him, David uses a slingshot and 5 stones to slay Goliath.  David uses God’s strength to help him in the battle.  David has no fear because he knows he has God to fight this battle.

This story is not about a boy slaying a giant.  It is about a boy who slays a giant with God’s help.  It is God’s fight, not David’s.

We all have our own Goliaths.  We have to identify them and fight them with God’s help.  It is His fight that we have to win.

These 5 things will be present in your fight, from 1 Samuel.

1. Negative feedback when you attempt to conquer a giant (17:28-31). Ignore it!  Listen to God and no one else who is trying to push you away from God.

2. Be faithful in the smaller, daily trials so you’ll have confidence to defeat the giants (17:34-37). Small victories are to be celebrated.  Ever hear of taking it one day at a time?

3. Use your gifts, no matter how insignificant they seem, but be sure to combine them with faith (17:38-40). Seven years passed between the time that David was anointed king and him slaying Goliath.  He was in the fields all day watching sheep.  Do you think that maybe he used his slingshot a little passing away the time?  Maybe he saw how far he could throw a stone or if he could hit that tree 100 yards away.  He has plenty of time to use his gifts.

4. Respond to the enemy’s trash talk with Truth Talk in God’s name, not your name (17:41-47). What does your Bible say?

5. Be proactive in your faith. Strike first (17:48-49). Don’t let your giant win by allowing it to strike first.  You dictate the terms by preventing it to ever strike.
