Today, is not that day

Between several PAX coming back from Spring Break and YHC being a little sore from the Lexington F3 1st place finish at the mud run, YHC planned on taking the foot off the gas a little this morning. I thought it would be nice for all of us to ease back into the gloom.

However, someone who will remain nameless (hmm..hmm Chinstrap) decided to send out a group text calling out to the Snakepit faithful the night before. In the process, someone who will remain nameless (Chinstrap) also poked the Ninja Turtle—big mistake. Not deterred however, seven PAX rolled into the gloom—except the one who sparked Donatello’s furry (Chinstrap). The faithful PAX paid the price for Chinstraps transgressions.

Mosey to the track

  • SSH—15 IC
  • TTT—15 IC
  • IW—15 IC
  • Windmills—15 IC
  • LB Arm Circles—10 each way

YHC decided to introduce the PAX to a girl named Cindy. One of YHCs favorite garage workouts when he doesn’t feel like running.

Cindy (20 minute AMRAP)

  •  5 Pull-ups (jumping pull-ups or negatives if necessary)
  • 10 Push-ups
  • 15 Squats

Don’t be fooled by the seemingly unassuming number of reps with each round. We cut it short at 16-17 minutes as YHC could tell the PAX had enough. Most PAX ended up around 12 rounds total—which is 60 pull-ups, 120 push-ups, and 180 squats. Cindy is repetitive simplicity that will smoke your entire body.

But, we are not done—Mosey to the big boy stairs

Descending Suicide Stairs/Merkins

  • 10 merkins—sprint to the top of stairs
  • 10 merkins—sprint to the 6th landing
  • 10 merkins—sprint to the 5th landing
  • 10 merkins—sprint to the 4th landing
  • 10 merkins—sprint to the 3rd landing
  • 10 merkins—sprint to the 2nd landing
  • 10 merkins—spring to the 1st landing

Throw in the towel—we are done.

 Prayer and Devo – Donatello

Moleskin

Great work by the PAX this morning. Much more challenging it reads on paper. Chinstrap was popular this morning.

YHC self-reflection—read at your own discretion

YHC is not a big fan of motivational speeches. They are OK, but they just don’t do much for me—much like the hell, fire, and brimstone preachers of my childhood. As an athlete I never responded well to being yelled at, grabbed, or verbally berated (possibly why I never joined the military). Once a series of misunderstandings and poor choices in words ended with my coach I in a physical altercation at halftime and 5 coaches holding back my dad (Baptist preacher) from coming on the field.

That’s not something I’m proud of; luckily I’ve matured over the years (although I was provoked for the record). The fact remains however, if you want to motivate YHC—make a wheel turn in my head. Make me think about something deep and meaningful. Give voice to sentiments that bubble under the surface I can’t quite put my fingers on.

Saturday, such an event occurred that’s really resonated with YHC.

During the BOM prayer, Chaser made the following statement in the prayer.

“One day our bodies will be void of energy. We will not be able to run, jump, crawl, and climb—but today, is not that day”

It’s a simple statement, but one that’s packed with truth. Perhaps it’s because YHC is self-aware enough to know he’s in his prime. I’ve been stronger, I’ve been faster, but I’ve never been as in well-rounded condition as I am now (at 38). Perhaps it’s because YHC also knows it’s not going to last forever. YHC realizes he can’t stop time, but the older I get the more time seems to move a little quicker. My parents are getting older and my children are growing up much faster than I want. Every time I notice, I also reflect on the fact I’m moving into new phases of life—each bringing me closer to that day when my body will not be able do GoRucks, P200s, or mud runs. It’s sobering.

The simple statement in the prayer hit the core of YHC. It gave voice to whats bubbling under the surface with YHC. It sparked a sense of urgency and the need to just live in the moment. At least for this moment in time I am able.I am able to run, climb, crawl, and jump—and I’m doing it with great guys that I genuinely enjoy being around. I don’t know how long it will last, I don’t know what the future holds—but that day, is not today. YHC wanted to bring this sentiment to the PAX this morning.
