#Hammer Goes to Recess

YHC has never liked the “F3 is like adult recess” familiar refrain. I guess I take it a little more seriously than “recess” (what?…me?…naw…). Heck, I even took recess seriously back in the day. It was time to go win something. #recesschamp Yeah, I know. Anyway…today at #Hammer really was like recess though. We ran, we hung from playground monkey bars, we did tug of war, we did burpees………..wait, you never did burpees at recess? Yep, I woulda won #recesschamp at your school too. I went and did it again…sorry.

Conditions: Low 60s and windy. Actually almost chilly.

THE THANG:
Fast mosey from COT down to Shannon Springs and down to the base of the hill.

10 Minute AMRAP(as many rounds as possible):
Run from base of hill to Satchel Ford stop bar
5 merkins (Full ROM)
5 squats (Full ROM)
5 burpees (Full ROM)

Mosey from Shannon Springs to the playground.
Partner up for 10 Minute Partner AMRAP(as many rounds as possible):
Partners both do 5 pull-ups, 20 iron cross each, 5 pull-ups
Run to basketball court and touch the near basketball goal and run back to playground.
(Most got in 4-5 rounds: 40-50 pull-ups, 80-100 iron cross)

Mosey out front to the pick up lane in front of the school where the tug of war rope lay in wait.
Team Tug Of War:
Teams of 7 picked by YHC
Round 1&2: Teams pull until YHC says “burpees” and then every man does 3 burpees and hops back on the rope, if YHC says “run” everyone drops the rope and sprints to their team’s line and back (~70-80 yards total). YHC called burpees and run twice each.
Rinse and repeat.
Round 3&4: Count off within the teams 1s and 2s. At call of 1s they drop the rope and do 5 merkins. At call of 2s they drop and do the same. YHC called 2 rounds of this as well.
Rinse and repeat.
Round 5: Straight up pull against each other.

Mosey AFAP to COT.

Announcements:
-BillyBob shared in COT the story of his friend Rocky from F3 Greenwood who is 46 and battling pancreatic cancer. I’m told he has a wife and 10 year old boy. You can follow him on twitter at @PalmettoRiskGrp. This story hit close to home for all of us as most of our pax are married with children and are within 10 years of Rocky’s age. We said a prayer for him and his family in the BOM and I have thought of him several times today though I’m not sure I’ve ever met him. Though I have no idea of Rocky’s current status or prognosis, when things like this come up I am struck by the fact that though I’ve never thought I will live to be very old, primarily because of a family history of heart disease and because I don’t really “go easy” on this life thing, I seem to somehow just default in my mind that I’ll live to be at least 60 if not 70 or maybe even 80. I suspect we all do that and go through life making these grand plans for what we will do later and how we will change the world, later. What if I told you that you were inside the last 10 years of your life? What if it was really the last 5 years? What if you’re in the last month of your life right now? I don’t say this to say that Rocky is in the last anything of his life. I pray that he wins this battle and lives to be that 80 year old. But hearing that a guy who is less than 10 years older than me is facing this disease, and hearing of auto accidents, heart attacks, etc killing even younger men, has to make us wonder if we’re doing all we can here and now to make each day count. I know it makes me think long and hard about that. If nothing else, seeing Rocky’s current battle can make each of us better tonight for our families, better tomorrow and going forward. Let’s maximize each day as unfortunately it often takes stories like this to slap us in the mouth and remind us that we are guaranteed no earthly timelines. Though I take refuge in the fact that I believe I will live eternally because I am a Christian I don’t think anyone, of any religion or no religion, would espouse just “playing out the string” down here. Could you be doing more? I think I could. Rocky, if you’re reading this, we’re pulling hard for you and we’re thinking of, and praying for, you and your family. Know that your story has affected other lives today. Get well, brother.
