Get In The Pink 5K with help from Speed For Need

Fresh off the SC Law Enforcement Torch Run, the Speed For Need Chariots were back in action on a beautiful Saturday morning helping 3 woman battling cancer “Complete Their Race”.  Many Pax from all three of our Midlands region showed up to be 3rd.

Our Track Commanders were all very excited about the prospect of completing a 5K.  For all of them this would be their FIRST 5K!  The smiles and laughter were in an abundance.  The number of times that our TC’s thanked us became immeasurable.

THE THANG:

Not your everyday 5K.  The GET IN THE PINK (getinthepink.org) is a grass roots, truly home grown race that benefits local women battling cancer.

Suzy McGrane was a local photographer who was diagnosed in her early twenties with breast cancer. While battling cancer in Arizona near her family, her friends from South Carolina gathered in Columbia to find a way to help with the financial expenses related to her treatment. The friends put together Save Our Suzy.  Ultimately cancer would claim Suzy’s life, but not her spirit.

Save Our Suzy became what is now known as Share Our Suzy, SOS. SOS’s goal is to allow patients to focus solely on recovery and not the financial stress brought on during this very difficult battle. The foundation picks up where Suzy left off and aids those with bridging the financial gap from diagnosis to remission. Funds raised are used to provide assistance to those with every day needs such as wigs, prosthetics, childcare, gas cards, utility bill assistance, medication assistance and more. SOS helps cover the critical areas that insurance companies do not.

The people SOS serves are more than just patients: they are mothers, grandmothers, sisters and daughters. They have children, spouses and responsibilities. Fighting cancer is about more than having chemo and radiation treatments. It affects all aspects of life. It is amazing what a wig can do for a patient’s self esteem. A prosthetic bra can make all the difference to a recovering breast cancer patient. Having family there to hold a hand during treatment makes the battle bearable. Knowing that the electricity bill will be paid is a big relief. SOS, a 501(c)(3) provides these types of assistance to people who would otherwise have to do without.

Sadly our fourth rider was not able to make the race.  She woke up with a fever on race day.  We have told the “Polka Dot Queen” that we owe her one.  She said that she WOULD collect soon.

Humble submitted,

HYC
