Devo:

1 Samuel 12:20-22 “’Do not be afraid,’ Samuel replied. ‘You have done all this evil; yet do not turn away from the Lord, but serve the Lord with all your heart. Do not turn away after useless idols. They can do you no good, nor can they rescue you, because they are useless. For the sake of his great name the Lord will not reject his people, because the Lord was pleased to make you his own.’”

Every one of us has been in a situation where we felt we messed up beyond all recognition. I’ve had several of those moments in my lifetime. I’m not talking about the time you said something and hurt someone (although, that certainly is included), but the situations where you feel you’ve destroyed everything around you.

I’ve made some foolish decisions in my life where I felt like I wrecked everything I had been working for. I felt as though I destroyed my credibility, my respect, and any shroud of honor I had worked hard to establish. I felt as if even God would find it hard to find any favor on me – let alone those I affected.

After the guilt of that settled in, I went on to feel like I needed to take some time and fix myself before I could ever be anything that God could use. I went from one of God’s sheep, to a wolf in sheep’s clothing (we talked about this last week), to wanting to be a part of God’s flock again. But I felt as though I needed to be quarantined away from the rest of the flock before God could use me.

And maybe you’ve had a similar situation.

I’m here to tell you that this is not the case. You are not useless and God can always use you – even when you don’t think he can.

In this passage, the back-story goes like this: the Israelites, wanting to be like the other nations, demanded that Samuel give them a king. Samuel tries to warn them what the consequences of their actions will be, yet they are still foolish. After showing them just how much they have angered God by ruining their harvest day, they repent and Samuel is able to offer some hope moving forward.

Even after the incredible sin they committed, even though there was no undoing that sin or subjugating themselves to the consequences of that sin, Samuel reminds them that they should not be afraid because God gives hope.

“The Lord will not cast away his people.”

As you can see, we aren’t much different from those in the past who were able to witness God’s power. Likewise, we can still receive God’s hope even after we’ve committed sin. We don’t need to quarantine ourselves from God just because we committed a sin. Instead, do as Samuel instructed and “serve the Lord.”

We can be a part of God’s flock. We can be foolish and return to our vomit. We can be a wolf in sheep’s clothing. And we can always return to God because He chose us to make a name for himself.

I will challenge you with this, however: when you commit a sin and return to God, how do you return to Him?

Tune in Thursday to find out!

Pothole out.
